Iceland Travel Guide: Northern Lights, the Golden Circle & Beyond
When to go for the Northern Lights, how to see the Golden Circle without the crowds, and where to stay in Iceland, from our advisors.
Iceland rewards travelers who plan with intention. The landscapes are every bit as dramatic as the photographs suggest, but the island is also popular, weather-dependent, and more spread out than most people expect. The difference between a crowded, rushed trip and an extraordinary one comes down to timing, routing, and where you stay. Here is how our advisors approach it.
Chasing the Northern Lights
Aurora season runs from roughly late September through late March, when the nights are long and dark enough for the lights to appear. Sightings are never guaranteed. They depend on solar activity and, just as much, on clear skies. The best thing you can do is give yourself several nights outside Reykjavik, away from light pollution, at a lodge that offers aurora wake-up calls. That is why our advisors build Northern Lights trips around at least four nights in the countryside.
The Golden Circle, Without the Crowds
The Golden Circle is Iceland's classic route from Reykjavik, and it earns its reputation:
Þingvellir National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and the site of Iceland's ancient parliament.
Gullfoss , a powerful two-tiered waterfall that plunges into a rugged canyon.
Geysir , the geothermal field where Strokkur erupts every few minutes.
Most visitors drive the loop at midday on a coach schedule. With a private guide, our clients start early or late, stop where the tour buses do not, and often add a farm-to-table lunch or a soak at a quieter geothermal pool along the way.
Beyond the Golden Circle
Geothermal Bathing
The Blue Lagoon is iconic, and it is busy. For a more serene experience, we arrange a stay at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, whose guests enjoy their own private lagoon and spa, or suggest quieter alternatives such as Sky Lagoon near Reykjavik or Forest Lagoon in the north. Timed entry fills quickly, so it is worth securing well ahead.
Glaciers and Ice Caves
Guided glacier hikes run year-round, and natural blue ice caves are typically accessible in the colder months. These are experiences to do only with expert guides, and we work with operators we trust for both safety and quality.
Whales and the Midnight Sun
From roughly May through August, the sun barely sets. It is a wonderful time for whale watching from Húsavík or Akureyri in the north, where humpbacks and minke whales are frequent visitors, and for long, unhurried days exploring the south coast and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Where to Stay
Iceland has fewer luxury hotels than many European destinations, which is exactly why the best rooms need to be secured early. Our advisors typically pair a design-forward hotel in Reykjavik with one or two countryside lodges, such as ION Adventure Hotel near Þingvellir, Hotel Rangá on the south coast, or Deplar Farm in the remote north for travelers who want a truly exclusive retreat. Through our Virtuoso relationships, eligible stays include amenities such as daily breakfast, hotel credits, and upgrades when available.
How Long to Stay
Seven to ten days allows for the Golden Circle, the south coast, a glacier experience, and enough nights in the countryside to give the Northern Lights a fair chance. Five days works for a focused winter escape. Two weeks lets you circle the island at a pace that still feels unhurried.
When to Go
September and March are our favorite shoulder months for a well-rounded trip: a real chance at the aurora, fewer visitors, and most outdoor activities still available. June through August is best for long days, hiking, and whales. Weather in Iceland changes quickly in every season, so we build flexibility into every itinerary.
What to Pack
Layers are everything: a thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof, windproof outer shell, plus a hat, gloves, and sturdy waterproof boots. Even in summer, you will want all of it.
